The data breach at Victoria University was caused by a compromised Microsoft Word document, according to a leaked email.

University chief operating officer Mark Loveard said that, although such attacks were all malicious, no malicious activity had been detected after the breach.

“We have advised staff, students and some former students to change their passwords,” he said.

The leaked email, sent to staff from the university’s information technology services director  advised the initial unauthorised access to university systems was through a compromised Microsoft Word document received via email from an external source.

It requested any staff who received suspicious documents from unknown sources  not to enable the “Edit Document” function.
