Hailstorms Hit Power Lines and Public Transport

Severe thunderstorms rolled through Colorado Monday afternoon, dumping hail as big as cricket balls in some areas and blanketing areas of Denver in a thick layer of the frozen precipitation.

Though it looked like snow in some images, this was not wintry precipitation that fell on Denver. In most areas, the hailstones did not exceed the size of golf balls, but that was enough to punch out car windshields and the windows of some businesses. In Wheat Ridge, just northwest of downtown Denver, baseball-sized hail was observed, the National Weather Service said.

In a statement, officials at Lutheran Medical Center in Wheat Ridge said the hospital building and medical offices sustained hail damage to windows, but no patients or staff were hurt by the storm. West of Denver, power lines fell and multiple collisions were reported on slippery roads, according to the Denver Post.

Users of the dating website Guardian Soulmates have received explicit emails following a data breach.

The email addresses and Soulmates usernames were exposed by a third-party service provider, according to Guardian News and Media (GNM), which has run the online dating service since 2004.

GNM said: “We can confirm we have received 27 inquiries from our members which show evidence of their email addresses used for their Soulmates account having been exposed. Our ongoing investigations point to a human error by one of our third-party technology providers, which led to an exposure of an extract of data.”

The problem, which has now been fixed, made it possible to find Soulmates members’ publicly available online dating profiles via the leaked data. No other personal information, including dates of birth or credit card details, was exposed in the data leak.

GNM apologised for the exposure of user IDs and email addresses and encouraged affected members to contact Soulmates support.

“We take matters of data security extremely seriously and have conducted thorough audits and are confident that no outside party breached any of these systems,” GNM said. “We have taken appropriate measures to ensure this does not happen again.”

Soulmates is the latest dating site whose user data has been revealed. The most high-profile was Ashley Madison, which suffered a data breach in which hackers released the personal details of 37 million users.

French Media Sites Taken Down by DDoS Attack

The websites of many French news companies, including Le Monde and Le Figaro, went temporarily offline on Wednesday because a company that helps speed delivery of their content was hit by a cyber attack.

The company, Cedexis, said it had come under a “unique and sophisticated” distributed denial of service attack.  Cedexis provides optimisation services for web performance across data centers and content delivery networks

Magazine L’Obs, which was also affected, said the attack had also hit the websites of several big French manufacturers.

“This attack caused a partial but widespread outage that affected many of our customers,” Cedexis Chief Executive Ryan Windham said in a statement to Reuters.

The company said service had since come back and that it was conducting an investigation

Leeds Bradford Airport Evacuated on Discovery of Suspicious Package

Leeds Bradford Airport has reopened after a police bomb squad carried out a controlled explosion on a suspicious package.

Passengers and staff were evacuated from the airport late on Saturday night after the suspicious package was discovered.

West Yorkshire Police’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal team were called to the scene at 8.09pm before carrying out the controlled explosion.

Arriving and departing flights were delayed and there were reports of passengers spending an hour stuck on grounded planes while the item was dealt with.

West Yorkshire Police said enquiries were continuing although the incident is not believed to have been “malicious or terror-related”.

“Following established procedures to protect passenger and public safety a cordon was put in place as a precaution.

“The airport was closed for a short time whilst the matter was being investigated,” the force said in a statement.

Passengers reported being kept on planes as the terminal was cleared, while at least one inbound flight was reportedly delayed from taking off at its departure airport.
